
G-Girls state bound…
The Graham High School G-Girls are headed to the Virginia Group AA, Division 3 state basketball tournament.
Graham earned the berth with a 58-36 win over the Tazewell Lady Bulldogs in the Region IV semifinals. Chelsea Gallinger fired in 18 points and Megan Henry added 17 for Graham, who plays tonight at Patrick County in the Region IV championship game.
Kelsey Sutherland had a game-high 21 for Tazewell.
In Group A, Region C, Division 1 both the Bland County Lady Bears and Narrows Lady Wave picked up semifinal wins and will face each other for the regional championship. Bland County topped Galax 66-41 while Narrows downed Bath County.
In West Virginia the Bluefield Lady Beavers meet the Summers County Lady Bobcats for the Class AA, Region III, Section 2 championship tonight at Princeton High School and in AAA, Princeton battled Woodrow Wilson for the Region III, Section 2 title at Oak Hill High School.
Hardin honored…
Steve Hardin, head coach of the Bluefield College Lady Rams, is the Appalachian Athletic Conference co-coach of the year. Hardin in his second full season as head coach of the Lady Rams, shared the honor with Rich Aubrey of Milligan. The Lady Rams were also awarded the Champions of Character Award.
Kia Gilliard earned 2nd team all-conference honors. Megan Randall was named all-freshman. De’Onna Darling and Takieya Rouse made the all-academic team.
On the court the Lady Rams’ fell in the conference quarterfinals 68-60 to Tennessee Wesleyan. The season isn’t over, however for BC, as they have qualified for the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament next week.
The Bluefield College men continue their quest for the AAC Championship tonight as they host UVA-Wise in a tournament semifinal game.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 at Dome Gymnasium, weather permitting.
